The video calling application integrates with Facebook through a browser plug-in, which is essentially a "miniature version of the Skype client", Rosenberg wrote. The company planned to roll Skype-over-Facebook out gradually, over the course of about one week, starting on 6 July. Supernodes act as phone directories for Skype that step in when the Skype application on a user's computer cannot find the computer it is trying to connect to, according to another Skype blogger. Rosenberg said the company is using the same "supernode" approach as it has been using for the stand-alone application. Skype's stand-alone application relies on a peer-to-peer network to accommodate the scale, but Facebook does not have any peer-to-peer capabilities. "To handle all of this, Skype has substantially increased server counts and added bandwidth in all of our data centers." In addition to buying more servers, Skype has also started using Amazon Web Services' cloud infrastructure offering Elastic Compute Cloud to solve the problem of scale associated with the large volume of traffic expected to come through Facebook, Rosenberg told ZDNet. "Even though Skype leverages its (peer-to-peer) technology to help achieve scale, we still rely on server infrastructure for several parts of the solution," he wrote. Jonathan Rosenberg, chief technology strategist at Skype, wrote in a blog post that one of his company's challenges in providing normal quality of Skype video calls through the Facebook platform at scale.
